A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. This process involves no physical connection between the circuits, as the energy transfer is mediated through magnetic fields. Transformers are used to increase or decrease the voltage levels of alternating current (AC) in various applications, making them essential components in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power.

Key Components of a Transformer:

Primary Coil: This is the input coil where alternating current is initially applied. The alternating current creates a changing magnetic field around the coil.
Secondary Coil: Placed near the primary coil, this coil picks up the magnetic field generated by the primary. The changing magnetic field induces an alternating current in the secondary coil.
Core: Often made of laminated silicon steel, the core provides a path for the magnetic flux, greatly enhancing the efficiency of the transformer by minimizing the loss of magnetic field.

Types of Transformers

Printed circuit board (PCB) transformers include surface-mount, toroidal, and planar transformers. Surface-mount transformers are compact for easy integration, toroidal transformers minimize electromagnetic interference, and planar transformers offer high efficiency and power density. These transformers are essential for power management and signal isolation in PCB applications.

Surface-Mount Transformers

Surface-mount transformers are compact transformers designed for mounting directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). They offer easy integration, high efficiency, and reliable performance in power management and signal isolation applications. Their small size and automated assembly compatibility make them ideal for modern electronic devices.

Toroidal transformers

Toroidal transformers feature a doughnut-shaped core, providing superior efficiency and reduced electromagnetic interference (EMI). Their design allows for compact size and minimal leakage inductance, making them ideal for high-performance applications. Commonly used in audio equipment, power supplies, and medical devices, they offer reliable performance with low noise.

Planar transformers

Planar transformers use flat, layered windings and magnetic cores to achieve high power density and efficiency in a compact form. Their design allows for excellent thermal management and low profile, making them ideal for applications in power electronics, such as DC-DC converters and high-frequency circuits.
