A transformer is an electrical device that transfers electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction. This process involves no physical connection between the circuits, as the energy transfer is mediated through magnetic fields. Transformers are used to increase or decrease the voltage levels of alternating current (AC) in various applications, making them essential components in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power.

Key Components of a Transformer:

Primary Coil: This is the input coil where alternating current is initially applied. The alternating current creates a changing magnetic field around the coil.
Secondary Coil: Placed near the primary coil, this coil picks up the magnetic field generated by the primary. The changing magnetic field induces an alternating current in the secondary coil.
Core: Often made of laminated silicon steel, the core provides a path for the magnetic flux, greatly enhancing the efficiency of the transformer by minimizing the loss of magnetic field.

How Transformers Work

When alternating current flows through the primary winding, it generates a magnetic field that varies with the current. The core of the transformer channels this magnetic field to the secondary winding. This varying magnetic field induces a voltage in the secondary winding. The ratio of the number of turns in the primary coil to the number of turns in the secondary coil determines whether the voltage in the secondary coil is higher or lower than the voltage in the primary coil.
